NAPOLEON ITEMS ON CUBA

From 2 - 14 Febr. 2015 my wife and I went to Cuba.
We made a trip by bus during 10 days, called Cuba TOTAAL.
It is another world to us.
I don't mention the old cars, the 'modern' hotels eso.
Nature is beautiful, food plenty.

Of course I was looking for something about Napoleon.
Homework I had done was resulting in 3 items.
One of them is amazing: the largest Napoleon museum out of France you find in Havanna!
We spent two hours there!

All pictures you can find on my latest website this:

I hope you are surprised too!

Give me your reaction!

Wagram

Everybody who is interested in Napoleon knows about Wagram. Nowedays we say Deutsch-Wagram. It is an flat field, where you can see far away. No hills to hide as in Austerlitz.
In October 2014 when we had 'done' Austerlitz, we went to Wagram.
There is a route starting at the museum in Wagram with many signs that explain the former situation.
Maps are included. So I made that route in about a day. When I was home I made a website again.
Look at  www.roelkvos.nl/napwagram and you see a short summary of the battle and the many pictures I made. Included is the GSP of every object.

Austerlitz

In October 2014 I made a trip of 12 days to Austria, Vienna and Austerlitz.
We started at Brno, a beautiful city in Tsechia.
All around the battlefield. You can made a battletour on your own. It takes more than three days!
On my latest website you can see photographs and teksts.

My next items will be Cuba (February 2015) and Canada (April 2015).
About that later when I have been returned!

Campagne de France

In May 2014 I made a trip in the north of France in relationship with the 200-years commemorating of the Campagne de France.

Montmirail

Champaubert

Berry-au-Bac

As a guide I used Le Guide Napoléon (2005),
Quel Roman que ma Vie (L. Garros, 1947, pag. 435-448)
et le website www.napoleon-empire.net .

It took about two weeks to visits all places, monuments and other objects.
I made a website about it:  www.roelkvos.nl/napcdf

Have a look on it!

Nieuwe website over Napoleon

I started a new website, specialy for The Netherlands.
Napoleon has been three times in Holland and he let his traces behind him.
To discover them all that's the question.
Already many I have traced and documented.
But I do not know everything.
So I ask help.
Please send me your discoveries so that I can place these on this new website!

In Brussels

In april we went to Brussels.
There is a lot to see and to seek about Napoleon.
As usual I used Le Guide Napoléon as my guid.
Look at:

www.roelkvos.nl/napinbrussel

to see the results!

This time it was a little hard to find all the objects.
We did Brussels in two times with an interval of tree weeks.
The first time we went on bike to the inner city.
Brussels seemed to be a little more hilly then we had suggested!

The second time I drove by camper through the city.
That is no fun. The problem is the parking, always!
I had to jump out of the camper to take a picture in an instant!

But.... we succeded!

Napoleon in South-Africa (2)

The second place I visited was 200 km away from Outshoorn.  It is named Beaufort-West. A small town most famous because of Christian Barnard, the first doktor who transferred a human heart
(see the map).

There is a very interessting little Museum, which has some objects about Napoleon.
Read the following article:

Links with South Africa’s Past.

Souvenirs of Napoleon.

As one passes through the sleepy Karoo town of Beaufort West there is little to bring to mind the self-made Emperor and conqueror of Europe, Napoleon the Great, but in the town hall stands a collection of items which once served the daily needs of that great general.

The articles: two silver salvers; a silver wine-cooler; three glass decanters; a dinner plate; a silver butter-knife; a silver spoon and two salt-cellars engraved with the East India Company’s coat of arms, were requested by Napoleon.

His quarters on St. Helena were found to insufficiently stocked with cutlery and crockery and the necessary additions were supplied from the officers’ mess by Col. Henry Hugh Pritchard to whom had fallen a share of the task of guarding Napoleon at Longwood.

During the years of exile, Napoleon and Col. Pritchard became firm friends and on some of his frequent visits to the Emperor the Colonel took along his youngest son, the Honourable Charles Pritchard, who was my great-great-grandfather.

Napoleon who had recently been separated from his own small son, the King of Rome, would delight in dancing little Charles up and down upon his knee.

After Napoleon’s death in 1821, Col. Pritchard bought the collection of domestic trifles and Charles, who later moved to Beaufort West where he soon became a prominent citizen, took with him the St. Helena relics. After his death in 1910 the collection was bequeathed to the municipality by his son, Benjamin, as a memento. Another son, William, drove in the pegs to mark Pritchard Street in Johannesburg.

But to South African Charles Pritchard alone can fall the curious distinction of an affectionate friendship formed on Napoleon’s knee.

Here are some pictures of the museum itself.

All the Napoleon-objects were placed in the empty corner at the entrance. But..... no objects to see!
I was very disappointed of course! I ask the manager and she told me that five days ago all objects were put in the safe! A museumcontroller had disapproved this corner. The objects were too valueable to expose in this simple way.  A better place and style shall now be chozen.

The very gentle manager, called Vuyiseka Myakala, promised me to send me pictures of all objects as soon as they are replaced! I am thankful to her!
So my 200 km (400 in total!) were not spoiled and after all I had a nice day!
